    Bottom line

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 is a decided favorite among reviewers of waterproof cameras for its tough body and extensive feature set. The DMC-TS5 replaces the highly reviewed DMC-TS3 and "can take even more of a beating than its predecessor." With good quality images, plus Wi-Fi and GPS along with Near Field Communication, the DMC-TS5 also offers good video modes. This is a strong, all-round camera that's comfortable to use.

    Ease of use

Straightforward operation. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 has the rectangular shape of many of its competitors, with the lens in the top-left corner. You need to be careful not to cover the lens with your index finger when shooting. The camera body is made of colorful (orange, anyone?) metal, and the large LCD panel on the rear is either "... one of the best LCDs in the compact camera world" or not as good as that on the Olympus Tough TG-2 or the Canon PowerShot D20. Although the TS5's controls are well-laid out, some testers found them difficult to use underwater. But the TS5 does have a unique Display button that lets users easily toggle through display settings. The menu system is user-friendly and presents no problems.

    Performance

Good all-round performance and speed. Reviewers report that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 rarely disappoints in its performance and picture quality. The photo quality is good, though, as with most waterproof cameras, you can see flaws if the pictures are viewed at 100 percent. The land photos are crisp and balanced, while the underwater images don't have the bluish tinge that's all too common with cameras in this class. Using the preset underwater modes, however, results in fairly flat images that have muted colors. Video quality is acceptable for a compact camera, and the TS5 is one of a few cameras that records full HD 1080p video at 60 frames per second. The camera is fast, starting up in less than a second and focusing very quickly in good light. The battery lasts for a well-above-average 330 shots.

    Durability

Metal body for ruggedness. The almost entirely metal body of the DMC-TS5 inspires confidence in its ruggedness as soon as you pick it up. It can safely go down to 44 feet underwater, but with the optional underwater housing case, you can extend this to 150 feet. As with many other rugged cameras, the DMC-TS5 is shockproof from 6.5 feet, pressure-resistant to 220 pounds and freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Features

Fully featured, including NFC. The feature set on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 is "... about as full-featured as you'll get on a rugged camera," says one reviewer, and others agree that the TS5's features are impressive. The GPS facility is quite extensive, with quick link-up to the GPS signal, a database of landmarks and a compass. The Wi-Fi is also elaborate, though it can be frustrating as you need to enter passwords when logging on to a protected network. As well as uploading your images and videos, you can send them to DNLA-compatible TVs or your PC. You can also remotely control your camera from your smartphone. Near Field Communication (NFC) is also provided. Videographers can shoot in HD or MPEG-4 formats. An optional waterproof case takes this camera down to 150 feet.
